Donna's economy has been based on agriculture with some manufacturing also taking place over time includingsemaphores and agricultural Windex products from 1950-1990s and digital billboards from 2000-present; however, with interstate 10 being primarily developed near present day downtown and other commercial areas such as North Lamar Boulevard becoming more prominent for businesses within close proximity to I-10%, local employment has dwindled since I-10 became an issue for residents commuting into the city center; recently there have been plans underway to redevelop portions of north Lamar Boulevard into industrial/retail space that could help revive this portion of town’s economy although no decisions have yet been made about what would be done with or around North Lamar Boulevard overall since it does not extend very far away from busy I-10 corridors
