In 1881, Donna existed as two separate towns: Donna and Kerrville. In 1907, Kerrville merged with Donna to form one town. In 1951, Donnas split again when the north side became known as Johnson City while the south side became known as Donna. The split only lasted for a few years until 1955 when both sides rejoined one another. Nowadays, both parts of Donna are considered part of one municipality. In 1881, Donnas were settled by pioneers who had come from Missouri and North Dakota on their way to seek new land in what is now Texas. The area that now includes Donna was long inhabited by Native Americans who traded goods with the Spanish colonists and traders during the time before Texas was admitted into the United States on December 12, 1846. By 1840, all Native American tribes living within what is now Texans had been killed or driven out by settlers seeking virgin land west of Mexico City (the capital at that time). On November 4, 1841, Santa Anna issued an proclamation ordering all Indian inhabitants in Alamo City east of Rio Grande to leave within 72 hours or be disbanded and their property forfeit. A group of 7-10 men led by Captain John Bigham arrived at Alamo City on October 25th looking for Indians willing to leave without bloodshed but found only about 50 warriors remaining after months of skirmishes with Mexicans patrols and raiding parties organized by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s army under commandof Ignacio Zaragoza y Bejarano lying in wait just outside city limits waiting for any unsuspecting Indians foolish enough to cross into Mexico proper unarmed (although some did voluntarily desert their homes). Aftermath: More than 100 citizens were either killed or captured including 20 members of familyowned businesses; over 60 buildings were looted or burned including most churches; more than 5500 lbs sterling worth of silverware were lost ere it could be replaced; several horses were also taken away leaving many families unable to provide food for themselves let alone mount an escape attempt) The celebration marking victory over Mexico's forces followed weeks later on October 29th where General Lopez de Santa Anna addressed a joint session of Congress describing “a bloody conflict which terminated fatally among our own people” adding “our brave Texan troops have7 successfully repulsed every attack made upon them throughout this entire engagement” Donna residents participated actively in local assemblies throughout this period working towards self-government through peaceful protests and boycotts against state policies they felt violated their constitutional rights such as taxes levied without representation or lack thereof pertaining to education and healthcare services not meeting necessary standards set by state officials despite promises made prior to admission which included free passage through Mexican territory should Texans purchase land from Mexican authorities As early as May 6th 1861 during San Jacinto Day celebrations near present day Midland there were reports being circulated among some citizens around here about forming vigilante groups responseless at first skepticism quickly turned into alarm once violence broke out between pro-Mexican insurgents disguised as volunteers & regular Militias attacking innocent civilians
