Donna is a small town in Texas, located near the Mexican border. The town was founded by pioneers in 1851, and has been home to residents of Anglo and Mexican descent since then. Donna was settled in 1881 by a group of Texans. The town was named after Donelson County, Tennessee, which at the time included what is now Donna. In 1897, the railroads reached Donna and so the first post office was established in that year. The name change to Donna in 1915 when gas wasn't available near the town so it changed back to Donelson in 1922. In 1932, a school was built and the name changed again to Western Springs School. That same year, a hospital was built and the name changed yet again, this time to Eastern Texas Hospital. In 1951, a dam was constructed and the name changed once more, this time to Eastern State Dam. In 1978, Eastern State Dam went out of service and Donna reverted back to its original name of Donna.
Donna is a small town in Johnson County, Texas. The population was 1,893 at the 2000 census. Donna is located in the central part of Johnson County and bordered by Potter County to the east, Piñonhan City to the west, and Lubbock to the north. The name "Donna" comes from Donelson Fork of the Red River. In 1879, J.D. Richardson named a stream after his sister-in-law Anna Roe. Anna's husband John DeWitt Richardson had been killed in an accident on the Red River while working for cattle drives across it that year. A few years later, Anna married local merchant George Wills who donated land along Donelson Fork for a Methodist church and school district. The first school was built on this property in 1887 and operated until 1912 when it closed because of low enrollment. In 1907, James Hargrave donated land east of Donna for a post office (the current location). The first postmaster was Fenton Weaver who served from 1907 until 1915 when he resigned due to health problems. In 1925, Mrs."Maggie" Rhodes donated land east of Donna for what would become Daisy Bail Bondsman Memorial Park which became one of the largest municipal parks in Texas with over . It opened its doors to visitors on July 4th, 1926 under direction of Drs."Charles" Clements and "Herbert" Weiser with assistance from 7th Cavalry Group Headquarters detachment commanded by Captain Harry Waddell which included four tanks! It should be noted that Daisy Bailman never died as claimed some have tried to make her do so - she actually committed suicide in 1951! According to the 2010 census data, Donna has an estimated population density of just over people per square mile (less than two people per square kilometer). This makes it one of Texarkana's most rural areas! There are no highways within easy driving distance here so residents must rely heavily on transportation options such as buses or trains which can get you anywhere you need to go whether inside or outside Texas!
