Donna was founded on November 9, 1881 by two brothers who named it after their mothers' maiden name: "Donnelly". The town began as a small farmers' market and post office. In 1905, Donna's first school opened and remained in operation until 1978. In 1955, the first Walmart store opened in Donna and remains present today.
