Donna, Texas is a city of over 200,000 people located in the panhandle of Texas. The area now known as Donna was founded by refugees from Latin America who arrived during the early 1800s. The town was named after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and it became an important stop on the trail of cattle drives that ran through the area. In 1881, Donna began to accept residents from all over Texas and Mexico. As a result, the population grew rapidly and development started to take place in both rural areas and downtown. The early gun sights in Donna were designed for use with rifles that were then less common than handguns. However, due to its growing population and new found accessibility to firearms, Donna soon became home to one of the most populargun ranges in Texas. Open sight guns use a single image to aim, while closed sight guns have two images that need to be lined up in order to hit the target. Donna, Texas is a small town in the southwestern corner of Texas. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso-San Antonio-Lubbock metropolitan area. Donna has been inhabited by humans since the Paleolithic period. The first European to visit the area was José de la Torre in 1720. Donna was founded on November 26, 1879 by James Kline and his family as a community for farmers and stock hands on Indian Creek near present day Midland City. In 1901, Kline donated land to form what is now Donna between Eagle Ford River and Brushy Creek. On October 13, 1912, during World War I, Texans from nearby Dallas raised money to buy ammunition for their troops in Donna and delivered it to their units in France over the Internet using chat rooms provided by Bell Telephone Company; this event became known as "The Donna Munitions Drive". In 1959, Donnas Municipal Airport opened when Midland City's Ryan Field reopened after being vacated by Midland Airlines due to construction of Terminal 4 at Sky Harbor International Airport. In 1990, Midland City annexed Donna making it an incorporated city. After years of discussion and debate between both cities over annexation issues that went unresolved until2010,[1] approval finally arrived on December 12th 2009[2]urban areas granted full incorporation status while rural areas were left unincorporated.[3][4][5] On July 1st 2020[6], following ratification of Comanche County’s tax laws passed through local referenda,[7][8][9]the last remaining unincorporated portions of Donna were annexed into Comanche County proper making it one municipality with a population of over 10,000 people which includes much of rural northwestern Comanche County including parts used today by Little Elm Oil & Gas Company operations located just outside Midland City limits on FM 2024 south (since completely abandoned)[10].
