Donna, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 1,541 at the 2000 census. Donna is named for the Donna family who settled there around 1875. The name comes from the Coahuila Indian tribe and their word "don" which means "land." In 1881, a post office was established in Donna and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1935, the townsite of Donna was annexed by Hudspeth County. The population of Donna increased to 2,141 at the 2010 census. The history of Donna began with its founding as a small settlement on November 11, 1875 by seven settlers led by Captain John Tipton and his wife Lucilla Hebert Tipton. Captain Tipton had been part of an exploratory party that explored what is now Hudspeth County in 1874-75. After reaching Donnacona Springs on October 25th of that year they camped for three days before continuing their journey downriver to Fort Stockton where they rendezvoused with other unit forces under General Sam Houston on October 30th. On December 3rd, 1875 about thirty pioneer women took up residence near present day Dona Loma Creek while cooking dinner for their group’s six men: Captains John Pemberton (of San Antonio), James Hickey (of Dallas), Wm Fenton (of Pasadena), Arent Beeson (of Amarillo), Nicholas Roemer (American) and David Borden (British). That evening they started out into what is now known as River Road northeast of present-day Dona Loma Creek just south of US 64 and east of FM 1411. They walked all night never stopping for water or food once reaching the banks of Clear Fork Brazos River at 9 PM local time on Thursday December 4th near milepost 6½ on today’s TX Highway 281A just west of Interstate 10A/US 64B junction between those two highways north/southwest of Dona Loma Creek crossing back onto US 64B eastbound within walking distance from their original campsite location after overnight rainstorms stopped their progress upstream during early morning hours Friday December 5th when darkness fell following light rainfall throughout most portions adjacent to creek mouth late afternoon Fri./early Sat./afternoon sun set over creek mouth opening January 8TH 1899 . . .
