Donna is a small town in Texas, located about 25 miles southeast of Houston on the Gulf of Mexico. It was founded in 1871 by settlers from New England. Donna is named after Mrs. Hogg, the wife of one of the early settlers. The population of Donna peaked at 1,500 in 1920 and has since decreased to a population below 500. The first school in Donna was built on the northeast corner of First and Main Streets. It was open for only three weeks before it caught fire and burned down. In 1872, a second school was built on what is now Elm Street near County Road 249. The school operated for six years before it also catch fire and burned down. In 1875, a third school was built on Cemetery Road between Main and Polk Streets. This school served grades K-8 until it closed in 1922 because it could not support the increased enrollment that resulted from World War I and World War II combined! In 1881, a post office was established in Donna with mail sent from Houston to all parts of Texas! The first postmaster, Wm Auldridge, used his own resources to build a new post office building which still stands today across First Street from the old one! In 1905, an electric street car system began serving Donna; this system continued until 1955! In 1915, Donnersville (now part of Tomball)was incorporated as an unincorporated community within Donna; however its ZIP code remains 77301! Mrs. Hogg donated land to create what is now Donnersville square which included her home as well as several businesses including Jardine’s Shoe Store & Saloon (which later became known as White Sands Casino), Jardine’s grocery store & bakery (later renamed Grits), Anna’s restaurant (& bar), etc… It should be noted that this donation did not include Donnasville itself – which remained part of Donna until 1984 when it became its own independent municipality!). In 1923, after many residents had moved away due to economic hardship caused by oil exploration efforts off nearby Beaumont Peninsula%, Anse de France Catholic Church was established adjacent to farmlands east of town on FM 1960 just south of US 281 & CR 3506N). This church served as both local parish & primary education center for area residents until 1978 when Donnarox Junior High School opened adjacent to Anse de France Catholic Church!! Today there are no active churches left within either DONNA or Anse de France Parish!!! Just like most small towns throughout America during these times – things changed quickly & much too often for those who didn’t leave!! After all – those were heady days indeed… Donna experienced some significant growth following World War II when more than 2,000 people migrated here from areas such as Beaumont Peninsula& Harris County! By 1971 only 500 residents lived here; however by 1990 over 10K people lived here!!! And while Donnansville square has seen few changes through the years – many businesses have been relocated - most notably White Sands Casino which relocated en masse from their original location just northwest of town back into town proper in 2001!!!!! Finally – though little has changed physically inside DONNA since its peak circa 1920 - MUCH HAS CHANGED ECONOMICALLY AS THE COMMUNITY UNITATED WITH HOUSTON HAS INCREASED IN POPULATION DUE TO THE EXPANSION OF TX HIGH SCHOOLS INTO THE AREA!!!! Nowadays – thanks largely totx high schools - many young adults growing up here attend college or other professional degrees outside DONNA!!!
