It was founded by Texans in 1836 as an agricultural community named Ellington on the current site of Mount Vernon, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Austin. In 1841, it became the capital of what would become known as The Republic of Texas and was renamed to Austin in honor of James K. Polk, then United States president and a native Texan. In 1845, it was annexed by Mexico and has been part of that country ever since. The history of Donna can be traced back to its early days as an agricultural community located near Mount Vernon on the banks of the Brazos River. A group of settlers from nearby Georgetown formed a town committee to survey land for a new town site in 1836, after hearing about plans for a new capital city at Austin due to growing population concerns in The Republic Of Texas created following independence from Spain. After much discussion and review, they came up with a name for their new home-Ellington after General Ewell's victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Hill two months earlier (1835). That same year, members elected John Sallis as their first mayor with Wm Hogg serving as treasurer; this was also the first time voting had been allowed in The Republic Of Texas. In 1840, when Colorado became organized as a state following Mexican independence from Spain, most Texans living westward realized that their future lay within American borders rather than across the naturalist-infested borderlands between Mexico andTexas which seemed like forever only potential destinations for those who could afford passage through one or other route crossing into America illegally or via smugglers working out trade agreements with both countries during this tumultuous era characterized by turmoil abroad and mounting social hostilities within its own borders including intermittent civil war between pro-American Caddo Indians living east of San Antonio while Anglo farmers west side enjoyed comparatively peaceable relations with their indigenous compatriots until violence erupted along these increasingly international boundaries known variously as "The Great Plains War" or just "the War."
