This diverse mix of businesses led to one of the earliest commercial entities that manufactures or distributes binoculars - Eastern Eye Glasses Ltd., Inc. - based here from 1978 until its closure in 1992. The company manufactured more than 2 million binoculars between 1978 and 1992, making it one of the most important producers of binocular products today. Donna is one of five towns in Comal County that are included within the Corpus Christi metropolitan area, which has a population of 2 million people. The name Donna comes from the Spanish word dona meaning "mother." The town was founded by immigrants from Spain in 1854. They named it after their mother Dona Concepcion de la Vega, who had come to Texas as a child with her parents and siblings. As time passed and more Texans arrived, they began to rename some of their local villages after prominent Texans or members of their own families. In 1911, Donna was renamed for author Lillie Bogan Wells. After World War II ended, many new residents moved into Donna from surrounding counties in order to find new opportunities and start anew. By 1970, however, most of the original residents had either retired or left for other parts of Texas or Mexico. Today's residents are composed primarily of Anglo-Saxon Protestants who were born and raised hereabouts.
