Dickinson, Texas is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 918 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Dickinson was John Dickinson who arrived in 1824. In 1836, Hernando De Soto discovered and named the area Dickinson after his father-in-law, Samuel Dickinson. One of the earliest businesses in Dickinson was a post office which opened on November 14, 1836. The first store in town was built by Jno. Atherton and Wm. Fenton on what is now Main Street. In 1870, a sawmill started operations in town and soon became one of the most important mills in Texas due to its production of lumber and other materials for buildings and infrastructure throughout the state (the mill continued operation until it closed in 1916). In 1862 an ironworks began producing horseshoes for use by local farmers but it only lasted for a few years before closing down; however, this event helped spur economic development within the community as many new businesses were founded around this time including a hotel/motel complex that still stands today on US 61 near downtown Dickinson – known as The Richardson Hotel – as well as several churches (Stations Churches), schools (Mount Carmel Academy and First Baptist Church), grocery stores (The Gilded Cage Store), automotive dealership (Johnston Automotive) and numerous other businesses which continue to operate to this day! Today there are several restaurants inside of The Richardson Hotel including Bluegrass BBQ & Catering (), Barefoot Bites () and DJ’s Pizza (). There are also several smaller businesses scattered throughout downtown such as Sweet Tomatoes (), Clean Sheets () and Lazy Bones Bakery (). Some notable landmarks located just outside of town include Crossroads High School (), oasis sculpture park (), Mount Carmel Academy () - home to both Willis High School football team and girls' volleyball team -and nearby Ellington Dam ().
