Dickinson, Texas is a small town in Hardin County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metro area. The community was founded in 1881 by Edwin Dickinson and his family as a trading post on the Colcribb River. In 1902 it became a school district with 10 schools and an enrollment of 2,500 students. In 1907 it became an independent municipality with its own government and elections. On November 3, 1912, Dickinson lost to local candidates for mayor and recorder by a vote of 5 to 4. In 1916 Dickinson merged with Arlington County to form Dallas-Arlington County Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The MSA had a population of 9 million people as of 2000. On December 15, 2009 the MSA adopted an ordinance declaring Dickinson an official city within the MSA. The first council meeting took place on January 7th, 2010 and all residents were given ballots to approve incorporation into the city limits of Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex In 2014 Mayor White announced that they would not seek re-election due to health reasons On May 9th 2016 District Judge Denise Coker ruled that Dickinson's incorporation into DFWMetroplex did not violate state law
Dickinson was founded in 1836 by John Dickinson. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the New Mexico Railroad, and it became a major transportation center for the region. In 1850, Dickinson was renamed Fort Worth after General George B. Texas, who had been instrumental in helping to drive Mexican forces out of Texas. The city experienced some success during the Great Depression, but fell into decline following World War II and the Korean War. However, Fort Worth resurgence has occurred in the past several decades, with new businesses coming online and regeneration of downtown areas.
