The Dickinson, Texas History Center has a rich history dating back to the early 1920s. The center was founded in 1967 as the Dickinson County Historical Commission, and became a state-licensed historical museum in 1978. As part of the Texas Legislature’s effort to make history more accessible statewide, the commission was renamed the Texas Historical Commission in 1998. In 2006, the TxHC partnered with Baylor University’s Early American Research Library to create a statewide online resource for historical research on Dickinson County. This innovative project allowed historians and researchers from across Texas access to valuable resources including images, documents, and oral histories from local residents. The TxHC is also responsible for maintaining and developing the county courthouse which is located on Main Street in downtown Dickinson.
