In 1924, when James Dickinson died at the age of ninety-six, his wife Clarissa took control of the business operations of West Springboro Farmstead and continued to run it until her death in 1966. During her tenure, she made significant contributions to Dickinson's cultural life; she served as president of both the Chamber of Commerce and the Richardson County Historical Society. She left behind an impressive legacy including numerous historic buildings and artifacts within the town limits.
Dickinson, Texas first came into being in 1853 when the land that is now Dickinson was purchased from the Comanche tribe. The town was named for General James Wilkinson Dickinson who fought in the Mexican-American War. The town rapidly grew and by 1875 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1907, Dickinson became an independent city and has grown steadily ever since.
