Dickinson, Texas is a small town located in northeastern McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded on November 12, 1872 by John Dickinson and his wife Elizabeth Cotton Dickinson. It became an incorporated municipality on December 2, 1907. On January 1, 1916, Dickinson voters passed a charter amendment creating a city government with its own general fund and budget. The city was merged into Dallas on July 1 of that year. The first white person to live in Dickinson was John Dickinson himself in 1872 when he moved from Maryland to help start a new settlement in what is now McLennan County. In 1907, the town had an estimated population of 150 people; however it Census reported that figure as having grown to 317 by 1910 due largely to the influx of Mexicans who were working in nearby cities such as Dallas or Fort Worth during that time period. Although many residents still spoke English fluently at home and took pride in their community's Anglo-Saxon heritage – until recently – most residents today are bilingual (Spanish/English). In 1916, after years of planning and discussion with other communities within the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area – including Irvington Heights (now Grapevine) and Richardson Center – Dickinson voters passed a charter amendment creating a city government under the name "Dallas City Council." At this point there were only about 100 people living in downtown Dallas alone - let alone 350+ people living within miles radius of downtownDallas! Dickinson was founded in 1836 by a group of Methodist ministers. The town became the county seat in 1851, and it was renamed Dickinson after General James Ewell Dickinson, who led the Union army during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Dickinson in 1853, and the first store opened in 1865. In 1886, the city had a population of just over 10,000 people. However, when oil exploration began in nearby Amarillo, Texas, Dickinson quickly became one of the most important cities in that area. By 1912, its population had reached nearly 30 thousand people.During World War II, Dickinson served as both an airfield and military base for Texas Air National Guard units based at Amarillo Regional Airport. In 1948–49, it also played host to the second annual Dallas-Houston International Racecar Festival.
