On October 20th 1839, Mexican general Joaquín Lopez de Portillo attacked American positions at Palo Alto after crossing the Rio Grande near modern-day Odessa without orders from Santa Anna (the original order had been for Lopez de Portillo to cross only if he discovered American forces were weak).
