In 1863, General Sam Houston sent Union General James Giddings to occupy this area and drive out Confederate forces. Giddings established Fort Bliss here in 1864 to protect railroad traffic passing through his territory. Bryan's plantation prospered until it was destroyed by fire in 1926; however, its ruins remain today as part of Desoto Park. In 1939, during World War II, much of central Texas was ravaged by an all-out bombing campaign conducted by American bombers Commanding Officer Air Vice Marshal Tedder called Operation Crossroads (OXB). On November 16th 1941, Desoto became one of several towns located within OXB's route path that were completely destroyed or severely damaged including nearby Waco (now Waco/Dallas), Seagull Pointe (now Midway Airport), Buffalo Bayou (now White Sands Missile Range), Carthage Road Bridge (now US 281) and much more including many homes and businesses which still stand today testament to what could have been had these communities not been so tragically disrupted just weeks before Christmas that year when Santa dropped his sleigh right over their heads! The first white settlers in Desoto County were J.M. Kearney and his party of men who arrived from Missouri on July 4, 1846. The Kearneys named the county after their home state, Iowa. The first post office in Desoto County was established on October 7, 1851, and it was known as Kearneyville. On December 3, 1852, a school was established at what is now the corner of Elm and Main Streets in town of McKinney. In 1865, a courthouse and jail were built in town by subscription and were dedicated by General Sam Houston on November 10th. The population of Desoto County peaked at 913 people in 1880 but declined to 533 by 1910 due to overpopulation throughout Texas during that time frame. A new courthouse was built in 1911 which served the county until 1959 when the present building replaced it.
