The Desoto History Museum, housed in the former Methodist Episcopal Church, is a statewide museum dedicated to the history of Texas. The first building on this site was a school in 1879. In 1907, it became the Desoto Historical Commission Building and later the Desoto County Courthouse. In 1952, it was renamed the University of Texas at Austin Library and Museum. It was moved to its current location on West Lake Drive in Austin in 1976. The University of Texas at Dallas acquired the building from UT Austin Library and Museum in 1988 and has used it as their main library since then.

The history of Desoto dates back to 1836 when the Republic of Texas was organized and a new county was created named Collin in honor of General Sam Houston. In 1881, the area that now includes Desoto became part of Dallas County. On November 15, 1907, a fire destroyed most of downtown Desoto and much of what is today known as The Elm district. However, some evidence suggests that this may have been an accidental start to a popular Edmonton hotel/restaurant movement which quickly grew throughout Dallas County with similar properties rapidly being built all around town As more people began moving into the area for work or pleasure, businesses like the Edmonton Hotel started popping up all over town filling up every available inch on Main Street including what is now The Elm district In 1916-1917 during World War I there were several air raids on Desoto by American bombers and it experienced one such raid on December 24th 1917 with three bombs hitting its courthouse Plaza cinemas killing six people and injuring many more On July 3rd 1928 local resident Earle Sperry donated land to be used as agricultural land which would become known as Sperry's Field after Earle Sperry himself In 1932-1933 during the Great Depression many jobs were lost in downtown Desoto due tolees banks cessation operations causing many residents to leave for lack of other options The City Council decided in 1933 not to rebuild downtown but instead move their library into what is now called First Congregational Church (originally Presbyterian) located off Main Street
