On August 1st of that same year(2), Fort Worth received news that Mexican general Santa Anna had surrendered at Monterey Peninsula following two weeks long fighting including one engagement at San Juan Bautista de Zaragoza which resulted in over 50 casualties for both sides.(3) This event solidified American control over Mexico east of Rio Grande River as well as effectively ending Mexican resistance against Ulysses S Grant’s Overland campaign leading up to Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865.(4) However this did not mean that all Mexicans had abandoned their fight against Ulysses S Grant; rather many displaced Mexican families relocated to various parts of America seeking opportunity and better lives.(5) As such despite American occupation efforts throughout much if not allof Mexico – land seized from “los miedos” or “the fears” – some elements continued to resist American rule.(6) On October 2nd 1870 – also known as Anniversary Day(7)—a group composed mostly self-proclaimed patriots numbering around 25 men led by Enoch Pratt announced they would begin preparations for an armed uprising should additional government lands be ceded theretoafter ratification by Congress allowing admission into states without Indian reservations(8)—thus starting what would eventually become known as the Apache Wars.(9) Notwithstanding these controversies surrounding potentially insurrectionary activity emanating from certain portionsofthe community— mainly those residing along US 81 southbound fromFort Worth—the establishment and growthofDesotoscale began soon thereafter with majorGeneral James J.-J.'s arrival spurring numerous investmentsin infrastructure developmentincluding water distribution systemsand schools(*)."
