Desoto, Texas is a small town in East Texas that lies on the banks of the Saline River. The town was founded by Germans in 1836 and it has been inhabited by Germans, Texans, and Mexicans since then. Today, Desoto is a small community with a population of around 2,500 people. The town was originally named "New Braunfels", but it was changed to its current name because of the fact that many German settlers from New Braunfels had settled in Desoto during the same time period. The first building in Desoto was built in 1836 by Grosse Pointe Schleicher and his family. The Schleichers were one of the largest landowners in East Texas at the time and they also ran a grocery store and tannery here. In 1855, John Fenton bought property here from Grosse Pointe Schleicher and began to build what would become known as Fenton’s Store. The store routines included selling goods such as clothes, hardware, beef cattle, wheat flour, saddles, horseshoes and more. Over time however, other businesses began to open up within Desoto too such as Joe’s Inn which opened up in 1865 and later became known as the Post Office Inn; McCoy’s Barbecue which opened up in 1924;etition Cigars which started out as a gas station back when electricity wasn’t available;and finally Smith's Hotel which opened up back in 1928. By 1927 however, there were only six buildings left within Desoto proper - four of these being churches (All Saints Catholic Church #1 & #2 ; First Baptist Church #1 & #2 ; Methodist Episcopal Church #3 ); two stores (Fenton’s Store & McCoy’s Barbecue); one house (Smith's Hotel)and two farms totaling 3 acres (the former All Saints Catholic Church & First Baptist Church). However even with these few remaining buildings standing quoins still remain today including both All Saints Catholic Churches (#1-#2) while Smith's Hotel still stands vacant today near mile marker 116 on IH 35W
The first white settlers in this area were the Desoto brothers, who arrived in 1836. The town was named for General Antonio López de Santa Anna, leader of Mexico's last successful resistance to American forces during the Mexican-American War. The original town and rancho were located on what is now the east side of I-10 near Beltway 8.
