It has been more than a century since Desoto, Texas was founded by its namesake, John H. Desoto. The city’s history can be traced back to the early 1800s when it was part of the Mexico-United States War (1846-48). In 1849, Mexican troops burned down Desoto’s courthouse and jail, leaving the town without legal recourse. To commemorate this event, local citizens erected a large granite memorial in downtown to remember all that had been lost in the fire. In 1903, Desoto became an official county seat of Hudspeth County. At that time, it was one of only a handful of U.S. towns located on both sides of the international border with Mexico City. As such, it played an important role in Anglo-American life and culture during this period. One local landmark that thrived during this time was the Hudspeth County Courthouse Annex which served as county court house and jail from 1903 until 1959. In 1957, Hudspeth County acquired additional land west of town and built a new courthouse which is still used today asDesoto’s main government center. The building is also home to several other county offices including district attorney and sheriff’s office buildings; as well as a museum which features exhibits about Hudspeth County history and culture. Despite being small relative to other metropolitan areas in Texas at that time, Desoto quickly grew into one of the most culturally significant cities in south Texas due to its rich Hispanic/Latino heritage and thriving economy which relied heavily on agriculture and manufacturing industries throughout much of its history. Today, Desoto remains another vibrant community with strong cultural roots while maintaining close ties with its Mexican-American neighbors – something that has helped make it one of choice locations for major events such as music festivals or Hispanic Heritage Days statewide!
