It served as Arlington's seat until 2015 when it became the new home of Denton County’s courthouse. Desoto County was created from parts of San Patricio, Comanche and Hidalgo counties in 1846. The county seat is Desoto City. The county has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The history of the county can be traced back to the 1840s when Spanish explorers discovered this area and named it Bexar de Santa Teresa de los Libres (Holy Land of the Saints). In 1846, Mexico gained independence from Spain and formed its own government, but part of Bexar de Santa Teresa remained under Mexican rule until 1848 when it became part of Desoto County. The first permanent settler in Desoto County was Manuel Romero who built a cabin on what is now Springhill Road in 1851. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Desoto County. During the years that followed, many large ranchos were established in the region with mines being developed near Las Vegas and Commerce City. In 1870, John Wesley Powell made his first trip downriver to what is now Beaumont Springs while exploring for oil resources outside of Denver Colorado during the early days of America’s exploration phase. A year later he explored an additional 25 miles downstream at Potholes Bluff before reaching Black Mesa where he found evidence Ofanite coal seams which led to his famous find - El Rinconcito (the Hole In The Rock) - some 20 miles upstream at Waco Texas on July 7th, 1872 . On November 2nd 1886 Congressman James Kenedy died suddenly after dinner at his home here in Desoto City with six guests including President Grover Cleveland; Mrs Kenedy attended services afterwards at Corpus Christi Missionary Baptist Church located on Main Street across from today’s courthouse Annex building; Mr Kenedy had been one-third owner since 1865of “Paddlewheel Rancho Grande” adjoining present day Springhill Rd., just east & southwest corner then known as Webb Rd., now owned by Ector family Ector family purchases title to lands adjoining Springhill Rd., just east & southwest corner then known as Webb Rd., now owned by Ector family on December 8th 1886 With hundreds more families arriving each year during the next several decades following Manifest Destiny policies pursued by General Sam Houston – “Open Range Country” designation given to portions of Texas northward thereof pursuant to Act No 3rd Session Laws OF 1850 – interior areas such as central & eastern Apache Indian Reservations lay fallow or were farmed only occasional times by individual ranchers/farmers often using minimal irrigation facilities available along riverbanks subject most notably those situated within historical Apache Nation boundaries i n Nacogdoches Co.; all these ranching efforts having little if any impact whatsoever upon social conditions within local rural communities nor did they provide markets or opportunities for Industrial development herein – substantial progress had been made however Preliminary surveys conducted prior thereto revealed potential well sites lying between White Sands National Monument & Austin TX vicinity both located approximately 46 Miles due East SE position approximating coordinates 10 degrees latitude 35 degrees longitude… Mapmakers estimate these potential wells could contain up to 350 Million barrels dry Wyoming shalecontaining bitumen estimated reserves amounting ultimately TO $2 Billion It should be noted that even though land titles originally passed through indigenous hands subsequent exploratory efforts culminating with General Sam Houston's Open Range Country designation Granted To portions Of Texas Northward thereof subsequent exploration activities resultant in vasttd discoveries oil fields Within aforementioned boundaries nonexcited such interest among various elements within local rural communities nor did they provide markets or opportunities for Industrial development herein resulting primarily thru Agricultural production utilizing existing infrastructure%)
