The first Desoto was founded by José del Carmen y Cámpora in 1836 as a small rancho on the banks of the Brazos River near present day Midland. In 1847, James Hogg established a dry goods store in what is now downtown Desoto and named it after his home town of Dungannon in Ireland. In 1865, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through Desoto on its way to Corpus Christi and destroyed most of the Indian villages along the riverbanks; this event has been called "the greatest victory won by Ulysses S. Grant during his presidential career." In 1895, Juana de la Cruz moved from San Antonio to Desoto with her husband Don José de las Casas to be closer to her brother Bernardo Landa who had founded an educational institution nearby known as La Universidad de San Antonio (later UTSA). La Universidad de San Antonio became one of America's first collegiate institutions and later served as both a teacher training school and research center for scientists and engineers before becoming an international university; today it remains one of Americas' most prestigious universities. In 1906, Harry Chandler bought 5% interest in La Universidad de San Antonio from Bernardo Landa for $5 per share which he would continue to own until his death in 1959; this gave him control over all aspects of the university including its faculties, curriculum, finances and staff. In 1916 Charles Baughman donated land south of downtownDesoto for use as a public park that would become Arlington Memorial Park today.; architect George Kessler designed much of Arlington Memorial Park's initial landscape including two large stadiums - Rice-Eccles Stadium which seats 50,000 people and Allstate Field which seats 60,000 people - both located adjacent to each other on Lake Travis just east of I-35W exit 191A .Today Arlington Memorial Park totals nearly 400 acres (160 hectares) with more than 20 miles (32 kilometers) of trails including 9 miles (14 kilometers) long loop around Lake Travis Trails system

It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and is included in the Dallas-Ft Worth (TX) Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Desoto" comes from Spanish and means "place where there are cottonwoods." The first European to visit what is now Desoto was Juan Bautista de Anza on July 10, 1769. He named it after his father's home village of Badajoz, Extremadura, Spain. A post office called Desoto was established in 1876, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. A cattle drive led by Cattleman John Wesley Powell crossed the Rio Grande near present day Desoto on July 8-9, 1913 when they were exploring what would become modern-day West Texas for the US Geological Survey. As they traveled downriver they came across an Indian campfire which alerted them to possible mineral resources located along their route downstream; this led to their discovery of Amarillo later that year. In 1916 local rancher Austin Cline opened up a dry goods store and began selling groceries and other items from his ranch east of town limits while he awaited construction of a rail line connecting Dallas with Fort Worth; this cut off access to central Texas for much of the summer months. In 1951 local developer Lamar Hunt bought some land south of town limits which he would develop into Arlington Hills Shopping Center - one of the largest shopping malls in North America at that time - anchored by JCPenney/ Sears stores as well as American Eagle Outfitters/ Gamestop stores before eventually being demolished in 2006 for use as an airport development known as Northwest Airlines Field (now IHOP). The original buildings from Hunt's development remain extant within walking distance of downtown Desoto today for residents and visitors alike to enjoy during visiting periods or overnight stays during George Bush Presidential Library & Museum operations nearby either side of Poindexter Avenue just east of IHOP campus footprint on opposite side from White Sands Missile Range .
