The Desoto community was founded in 1836, and the first gun target in the area was erected in 1854. The town began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Texas Railroad in 1867, and it soon became one of the most important businesses in the area. In 1937, Desoto became an incorporated municipality, and its first mayor was John A. Klusendorf. The town continued to be a major local business until the late 1990s, when it fell into decline due to over-regulation by local authorities. However, recent redevelopment has begun to revive interest in Desoto as a tourist destination, and it is now one of the most popular small towns in Texas.
Desoto is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. The first Anglo settlers in what is now Desoto came from Missouri and were led by Capt. James Bowie in 1836. They named their new settlement for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had surrendered to Mexican forces at San Marcos on April 6, 1846 during the Mexican–American War and had been imprisoned in Tularosa Wells since that time. The town charter was granted on November 12, 1849 by Governor Wylie Fenton to Elisha Phelps and Isaac Brockman alias "Hogue". A post office called Desoto was established at this location on December 15, 1850; it closed on September 30, 1870. In 1861 Confederate forces under Gen Joseph Hooker attacked Union army installations near Desoto while withdrawing from Richmond following the Battle of Antietam; Confederate Lt Col Robert Ewing's brigade destroyed most of an arsenal complex including cannons and stores stored inside two brick warehouses used as ammunition storage facilities east of town. This event helped spark a building frenzy within the small town which lasted until 1865 when desegregation began in Texas public schools throughout the state resulting in desoto being designated as an all-white school district with its own high school (now known as Lone Star High School). In 1949 desegregated public schools across Texas were completed statewide; Desoto remained an all-white school district until 1965 when its status changed to Hispanicized District #1 with Hispanics taking over majority control from African American students at Lone Star High School which continued to be predominately white through 1990s when attendance levels reverted back to overwhelmingly black students During World War II Japanese Americans living west of Dallas were interned along with other enemy nationals located within Central Texas under US military jurisdiction until 1942 when they were transferred to East Mesa Detention Center south of Dallas where they remained until liberated by Allied Forces during Operation Overlord on April 21, 1945.

Desoto is a small town located in the panhandle of Texas, about midway between Austin and Dallas. The population was 8,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first Desoto residents were Native Americans who lived along the banks of the Colorado River in what is now Alpine County. They were followed by settlers from Mexico who arrived during the mid-19th century. In 1849, both companies of United States Cavalrymen fighting Mexican forces discovered natural resources under way near present-day Desoto and called it Gold Hill after General Stephen F. Austin's discovery at San Marcos in 1846. The New Mexico Railroad reached Desoto on October 25, 1867, completing an important route linking East Texas with Western Kansas and Albuquerque before entering Mexico at Juarez on November 15, 1870. When Texas became a state in 1907, it included all of what is now Arizona Territory east of the Pecos River except for parts of Tucson and Phoenix (the latter becoming part of Phoenix on January 1, 1912). When Arizona gained full statehood in 1912, its western boundary was adjusted to include most or all of modern Desoto including much of Gold Hill east to Rincon Valley which had been detached from Tucson as part of that state's annexation into Arizona; this created a new town named ScottsdaleArizona within DESOTO limits since 1799 when Scottsdale was founded by James Hancey adjacent to PRESIDIO de la Libertad grant ©1790 de facto inside Tucson boundaries adjoining Maricopa Indian Reservation grant ©1847/48 granted by Spanish Governor García Márquez Goicoechea to Chief José Francisco Xavier Madero y Echeverria seconded by Captain Manuel Antonio Moreno on December 12 1800 [See: History Of Scottsdale AZ]. On February 26 1861 - days after Fort Sumter surrendered - President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order 9409 entitled "Awarding Land For Public Use In The Southwest District Of Texas" which allocated 640 acres (263 ha) southeast corner lot #814 ('Gold Hill'), bounded today by Rodeo Drive NW., Interstate 5 NW., Business Loop I-35W., Cottonwood Ave NE., Pruitt Lane SW., Harrison Rd SE., Goldwater Dr SW & triangular pieceNW cornerLots #623-629 are also inventoried within DESOTO limits described hereafter Lot numbers & descriptions herein correspond with LOTS #814 & 815 surveyed hereabouts as well as lots lying WSW side Yarborough Rd thence NNE corner Rodeo Dr NE . . . The Desoto County seat is located in Amarillo, Texas. The county was organized on November 15, 1875 and named for General Antonio Desoto who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first courthouse was built in 1881 and the present courthouse was completed in 1912.
