Desoto, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The name Desoto comes from the Choctaw word "deshi" meaning "a clear stream." The first settler in what is now Desoto was William A. Hickey and his family in 1851. In 1872, John Ladd founded the Ladd Mercantile Company here and developed some of present day Desoto into a commercial center for central Hudspeth County. The cotton gin located near present day Floresville became one of the most important engines of production in this region during the 19th century due to its ability to turn out large quantities of raw cotton very quickly. Cotton gin operators such as Jno. Pemberton (1860-1912) and Wm Fenton (1864-1948) built their businesses around this machine which made it possible for farmers to bring cotton upriver to market quickly and work with little input other than water power and human labor - an essential ingredient in early industry development hereabouts! In 1902 Demetric Cotton Gin Company moved its operations from Houston to Desoto after purchasing a former hitching post on FM 488 just east of town limits that had been abandoned by its original owner because he could not get his mules past those high banks! In 1912 saw establishment of First Baptist Church which later become Jordan Valley Bible Chapel before being sold off in 1978 and merged into First Baptist Dallas earlier this year! This beautiful historic building still exists today – it’s currently used as office space by Third Methodist Church across town! It was not until 1912 when prohibition began making local whiskey increasingly difficult to obtain that several businessmen decided to openromptu speakeasies called “The Bottoms Up” throughout central Hudspeth County – including future state legislators John Kline (R), Leroy Gomez (D), Willis Barnes (D), Clyde Tolbert (D)) – providing entertainment for Gilded Age Texans who were trying avoid law enforcement attention while still enjoying a good time! One such venture led directly to Prohibition itself when two local Iowan brothers named Harry Herndon & Bill Cutshall opened “Herndon Bros., Ltd” Whiskey Store at 6th Street and Illinois Avenue back on November 16th 1915!! This store did quite well for itself until 1918 when prohibition ended!!! Strangely enough though, following repeal there actually became more speakeasies opened up throughout central Hudspeth County than ever before!!! What happened? Well….. people simply stopped drinking!! And that’s how we got our current generation associated with hard times????? huh???

Desoto is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. The name "Desoto" was given to the community by Mexican Americans who came from the village of Desoto de la Raza (now part of El Paso) in 1845. The first white settlement in what is now Desoto County was established on the present site of downtown Des Moines by James Fenton and his family in 1851. A post office called Fentonville was established in 1852, and soon afterwards a store and school were built there. In 1857 an express road was opened from Wichita Falls to Galveston; this connection facilitated agricultural production and helped bring settlers to the area. A Methodist church had been organized in Desoto by 1830, but it did not become operative until 1861 when Rev. John Swayne arrived from Arkansas with eight ministers and opened it at the corner of Broadway and Elmira Streets. By 1870 all of Hidalgo County had been organized into twenty-six precincts; but for many years no one paid much attention to the little town located within its boundaries. In 1907 local officials decided that it would be more advantageous to annex what is now southeastern Polk County rather than wait for a countywide election which would have taken place only if all fifty counties participated; so they tookaction Accordingly, on December 12th 1907 Desoto became part of HidalgoCounty! Despite its NAME change, most people still think about DESOTO as being hometown for some famous people or places associated with ranching or agriculture - like Curly's Barbecue sanctuary just outside town limits!
Desoto was founded by Captain James H. Desoto in 1836. The town was named for Captain Desoto's father, who had been born in the area in 1788. The first post office was established at Desoto in 1837. In 1860, the United States wagon road called the Santa Fe Trail crossed through Desoto and led to New Mexico.
