Desoto is a city in Texas, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The population was 231,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Ft Worth, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Desoto was first settled by French traders and travelers who journeyed through this area in the late 18th century. A post office called Desoto was established in 1859, and became a town on November 15, 1880. The name Desoto has been given to various places throughout its history – including: a small community near Waco; an agricultural center west of Amarillo; and finally, an urban area located within the boundaries of Dallas-Ft Worth. In 1915, development began on what would become known as Baylor University's new campus site just east of downtown Desotosville. The university opened in 1916 with only 9 students and 2 professors. Today, Baylor University's main campus spans over 210 acres (80 hectares) across two townships – Baylor Village to the south and Westwood Village to the north – making it one of largest university campuses in Texas or any US state. Another important event that occurred during those early days of Baylor University was World War I – when classes were temporarily suspended for patriotic purposes due to military enlistments nationwide. However, despite having no students among his faculty or staff, Mr. McLaughlin managed to get together some able professionals from his home country and open up shop right next door at McLaughlin's Garage Workshop on South Lamar Boulevard which continued operations until 1931 when it leased space from Baylor University's Physical Plant department for their own use as a garage workshop/studio/warehouse combination - now known as McLaughlin’s Garage Museum! This physical plant operation produced many items which have found their way into popular culture such as dishes made by Mrs medianeta Kappeler from Strong’s All Purpose Kitchen fame; scenes from "Butterfly"; models made by Herbert Hildebrandt while he worked at Sperry Rand Corporation; cars built by Tod Taylor under license from Ford Motor Company - all examples being available for viewing inside one of America’s most famous historic garage facilities today! On October 1st 1907DesOTO voted overwhelmingly not to annex Denton County! After much discussion between city officials & citizens about annexation desires we came to understand that there were too many other cities (& suburbs) wanted annexation & our hopes lies with Denton County ONLY If they allow us enough time & consideration about how best To serve all desotians
Desoto County was formed on November 3, 1847 from portions ofince Presidio and Medina counties. The county seat was located in Desotoville.
