They were located in the town of Independence, Texas. At that time, it was an open-air shooting gallery where people could take their pistols to shoot at targets. In 1902, the first store in Desoto opened its doors and began selling firearms. It was called the “Desoto Gun Store” and it was the only store in town that sold Firearms and ammunition. The store continued to exist until 1951 when it closed its doors for good. The second store established in Desoto happened to be owned by Harry Sells who also ran a grocery business on Main Street next door to the old Desoto Gun Store. Sells started buying firearms from George W Smith and added them to his grocery business which then became known as “Sells Rifle & Pistol Emporium” In 1922, he started selling handguns too! The first white settler in Desoto, Texas was A.M. Holland in 1876. The town was named for General Antonio de Jesús de la Garza y Torres, governor of Coahuila and Chihuahua at the time. In 1907, Desoto became a census-designated place (CDP) and was annexed by Dallas on November 15, 1907.
