Desoto is a small town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town was founded by José María Desoto in 1836 as a trading post on the Waco River. Desoto County, Texas was founded on November 15, 1836 by James H. Desoto and his wife Helen. The county seat at the time was present-day Wichita Falls. The first post office in Desoto County was established in 1837. In 1840, the first courthouse in the county was built. The county seat changed to Wichita Falls in 1851 when it became a part of Wharton County. On November 1, 1907, Desoto County merged into Archer County.
