Desoto is a small town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,609 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Desoto comes from Spanish and means "place where cotton is grown." The first mention of this place was in 1836 when General Sam Houston sent an army to attack the Mexican village of San Juan Bautista de las Cuevas on the banks of the Brazos River. The Mexicans also named their river after a saint (Desíto) and they also used to grow cotton so it must have been a very good place for growing crops. In 1875, A.G. Spalding built a sawmill on what would become known as Spalding Street in Desoto Township. This mill became one of the most important mills in Vernon County and produced lumber for many homes and businesses around Wichita Falls until it closed its doors in 1937. In 1916, another sawmill opened up at mile marker 149 on I-35 near present day Wichita Falls and continues to produce lumber today; it is now called Southland Lumber Company Inc., though still operated by descendants of A.G.'s family who operate it from their home there. In 1958, Desoto had just over 1000 residents but rapidly grew with new construction taking place throughout town including two high schools (Shane High School & Highland High School), several churches ( worshipped here before moving out into other towns), three convenience stores/grocery stores, four bars/restaurants, two post office facilities - both ZIP codes 76598 & 76614 - six service stations - all servicing Vernon County except one which only served Wichita Falls - more than twenty businesses! The influx of people and development has led to some interesting nicknames for this diminutive town such as "Little Wichita" or "Texas' Tiny Town". One often hears about these days: "When Desoto goes down hill", meaning that things are going to get worse before they get better because there's always something happening in town that needs doing! I'm sure you're familiar with all these places mentioned here- Shane High School & Highland High School being two recent examples- but if not then I'll give you an overview: The Shane HS football team won state championships back in March 2009!!!

Desoto, Texas is a small town in the southern portion of Baylor County, Texas. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Nacogdoches Metropolitan Statistical Area. Desoto is located on U.S. Highway 81 north-northwest of Amarillo and south-southeast of Nacogdoches. The town was founded by George Waddell in 1881 as a result of his purchase of 5,000 acres (20 km2) from the Cochise Indians for $10 per acre ($ in 2018). In 1896, Desoto became an independent municipality when it seceded from Caldwell County to become its own entity. On January 1, 1909, the townsite of Desoto and portions of Caldwell were combined to form Amarrillo after it was approved by a vote of its citizens. The new municipality had a population of 2,522 residents and included alluvial flats adjacent to present day Desoto Boulevard and US 81/US 77/TX 99W. In 1938 Desoto incorporated as a city with a populationof over 100 people while still maintaining its municipal government style with an elected mayor and five council members plus one representative from each business district within the city limits who voted on matters pertaining to City Government including but not limited to: finance; elections; zoning; public works; street improvement projects; fire prevention; Parks & Recreation Department; library operations etc.; which continues today as City Manager’s Office within the Mayor’s Office setting policy for all city services within the boundaries including but not limited to: transportation planning & operation – managing all funders for capital projects such as acquiring or constructing transit routes or providing funding leases for bus lines downtown or expanding sidewalks & bike paths throughout the community periphery both arterially & municipally owned open space according to current land use regulations otherwise known as Physical Plant ServicesZone Services provided through contract with private property owner located just east Additional service includesStreet Inspections conducted weekly pursuant to state law which authorizes physical inspections during normal business hours without prior warning any tenant or visitor other than those enumerated herein Street Lighting plans are developed annually with input from Councilmember appointees who chair special committees responsible for providing oversight over lighting designs & implement potential changes based on research done throughout their districts Each committee member also has direct access to Lighting Superintendent should they desire Light Changes that fall outside meeting agendas items discussed at meetings may be brought up for discussion at future meetings subject however alwaysto approval by respective Committees before taking action
