Desoto, Texas is a small town located in the US state of Texas. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The town was named for José Antonio Desoto, who fought in the Mexican-American War and received an award from President Abraham Lincoln. Desoto is located on the banks of the Nueces River, about 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Austin. The first white settler in what is now Desoto County was James Fenton, who arrived in 1836. Fenton founded a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and developed an agricultural trading business. A post office called Fentonville was established in 1838, but it failed to take off and closed two years later. In 1840, explorer George Wickersham explored what is now Desoto County and named it for his friend José Antonio Desoto. By 1846, most of present-day Desoto County had been purchased by Nathaniel Lyon from Mexico as part of Rancho San Antonio de Bexar (later known as Bexar County). In 1848 Juana Sánchez married José María Ortiz de la Cueva y Pacheco; they founded a rancho (ranch) called Villa Ortiz near present-day Mesquite. In 1850–51 another group of Mexicans arrived in what is now Desoto County with the goal of establishing themselves permanently as farmers: Manuel Francisco Gomez y Valdez; he soon sold his interest to Juan Crisanto Fernández y Mirabal who continued to run it until 1870 when he sold it to Fernando Guerra y Sepúlveda. In 1865 Juana Sánchez died after giving birth to her second child; her husband remarried within weeks and took up residence at Villa Ortiz with his new bride Maria Luisa Chávez Morelos alias "Talia". Thereafter Villa Ortiz became one of several Hispanic ranches that dotted Travis County during this period - one example being La Encinas near today's Marble Falls. On July 16, 1920 Samuel O'Brien set out from Austin on horseback legendary westbound migration route Old Route 66 known as "The Ride". He reached their current location at milepost 924 on October 15 following what would become known as O'Brien's Trail which crossed Slaughter Creek at that point about six miles east of present dayDESOTO
The town of Desoto, Texas was founded by José and Maria de la Luz in 1836. It was named after the nearby mountain range that provided natural resources for the town. The original settlers were Native American traders and their families who moved to the area in search of land to farm. By 1840, Desoto had a population of 100 people. In 1853, a post office was established in the town and it remained in operation until 1907. The first school in Desoto was built in 1856 and served as both a daycare and elementary school until it closed in 1903. A second school was built on the same site in 1907 and it remains operational today as part of the Desoto Independent School District.
