The first handguns in the area were built by Master Gunsmiths named Wm. H. Beaumont and James Wilkinson. In 1881, a group of businessmen founded the Desoto Rifle & Shotgun Club and began manufacturing their own firearms. The club allowed citizens to purchase rifles and shotguns from them without prior registration or proof of ownership. By 1901, Desoto had become home to one of the first rifle clubs in Texas. This organization discouraged firing at night because it was dangerous for people on foot to approach a revolver-armed gunman in his car or on horseback with an unjacked rifle! In 1914, John Browning designed his first air-cooled Lever Action Rifle which became known as the Browning Hi-Power Rifle. This firearm was quickly adopted by American troops during World War I due its accuracy and firepower compared to other weapons available at that time. The weapon remained popular after the war thanks to its easy handling and low recoil. From this moment forward, firearms manufactured withinDesoto would be known as Brownings! In 1949, Desoto became home to America’s oldest Sheriff’s Department when Deputy Royce Lunsford was appointed sheriff based out of town on land donated by General Edwin Easley! As law enforcement activity increased throughout Texas during the early 1970s, gun shops catering specifically to this type of activity sprang up all across the state! Desoto is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 921 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first post office in Desoto was established on August 24, 1872, by George W. and Fannie J. Bentley. The name "Desoto" was given to the town by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who thought it resembled the Spanish word "despertar" meaning "to startle." The community began as a small log cabin community near what is now Uptown Desoto. In 1875, Isaac Lyon built a log cabin on what is now Prairie Avenue which became the nucleus of present-day Desoto. Initial growth occurred due to cattle drives brought in for roundup during the late 1800s and early 1900s and later manufacturing activities such as farming implements and saddles from nearby Haskell Manufacturing Company attracted settlers to this new community. In 1903, Charles Ewing erected a store building on Main Street which remains standing today as one of Desoto's most popular tourist attractions - it served as an important stop for travelers through its years as a center for trade with surrounding counties and Mexico City until it burned down in 1984 during Hurricane Ike; however, rebuilt at its current location less than two miles away since then, it continues to serve as an important cultural landmark in Desoto dating back to that time period A post office called New Braunfels was established at this location on October 15, 1907; however because of mail theft problems among local residents (the mail being taken into Mexico), New Braunfels was moved east two months later to its present site effective November 1, 1907 when all mail within Hidalgo County moving east arrived there instead of at San Angelo where it had been prior . It should be noted that while Post Office #2 still exists next door (on Elm Street) inside the currentOld Mesquite Building located off I-10 between FM 580 & 610), both buildings were destroyed by fire in 1984 when Hurricane Ike hit – although they have since been renovated/reopened primarily used for housing purposes adjacent to their original footprint . On May 2nd 1912 Community members drilled oil wells outcroppings about 8 miles west of our current town line – these wells were quickly abandoned due to high water levels so no production took place but some exploration did occur over several years starting about 1916 or 1917 when water levels went down’ ; incidentally these wells are also mentioned in an old advertisement from 1915 looking for men “To drill well Nearby” really referring only to those drilling rigs located just west of our current boundaries today Some interesting things found while exploring these waters: Rocks bearing names such astoiletiteand peridot were recovered along with artifacts including tools used extensively during oil field operations’ As oil prices plummeted following World War II many people left Texas for lack of work opportunities outside the state– Desotos mainstay clothing industry largely ceased operations following WWII with smaller stores continuing up until around 1970 When jean poujols opened his independently owned French restaurant right across from Old Mesquite Store (now known locally simply as Poujols Place) things changed again starting around 1978 when he started serving nightly wine tastings exclusively from his restaurant during lunch hours resulting in increased foot traffic & business so much so that he decided not only open another restaurant but build himself a larger factory specifically catering to this growing demand making him one of Houston’s longest running restaurateurs
The first permanent European settlement in Desoto, Texas was by the Spanish in 1836. From this initial exploration and settlement, Desoto developed as a small frontier town. In the 1840s, it saw growth due to the arrival of cattle drives and later railroad development. The city experienced significant growth during World War II as a result of military activity in nearby Fort Worth. Today, Desoto is an important cultural and commercial center for the region.
