After years of growth, the post office was renamed todesoto in 1907 due to its location on the Missouri River between Austin and Round Rock. Today, Desotoson Main Street still bears that name as does the Sargent desoto School District which encompasses parts of east Medina County as well as south Lamar County. After his release from prison, Houston set about forming an army and leading it against Mexico in what is known today as The War for Independence (1845-48). In this conflict, Houston emerged victorious over both Mexico and Spain; becoming one of America’s most celebrated heroes. He remains one of our most popular historical figures and has been immortalized in songs, movies, books, monuments and other forms of art ever since. Today, Desoto remains a small town located within Archer County within east-central Texas between Austin and Jacksonville. It was formally named after José Antonio Desoto y Costilla (1795-1865), who served as Presidentof Mexico during much of this time period; making it one of only two places in North America where this happened (the other being California). Jose Antonio Desoto y Costilla was born at Chipolaajaquián near modern day Monterrey in 1795 CE but died young at age 33 while serving as president during the mid 1800s CE . His father Pedro de la Cueva y Costilla was also an important early leader inDesoto County although his family never lived there permanently . AlthoughChipolaajaquián may have been founded by Pedro de la Cueva y Costilla himself some time before 1795 CE , it would be until 1827 when present day Archer County became part ofTexas when Spanish colonists arrived looking for land westward beyond San Antonio Bayou In 1836 American forces invadedTexas following Santa Anna's decision to fleeMexico amid accusations that he had murdered thousands includingformer President Tomás Romero Lugo
The first European to visit the Desoto area was José Narváez on April 24, 1778. He named the area Santa Fé de los Reyes de la Patria (Holy Faith of the Saints Francis and James) after his patron saint, Saint Francis Xavier. The area was also called el Rancho del Encantamiento (the Rancho of enchantment). Mexican traders discovered oil in this area in 1836 and began exploration. A small town began to form around this discovery, and by 1840 it had become an important center for oil production. In 1845 a new railroad was constructed through the region, bringing more people and industry into the area. By 1860 there were over 1,000 businesses in Desoto County. In 1870 a school was built in Desoto; it became one of the most popular educational institutions in Texas during that time.
