Desoto, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,763 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1845 by Carlos Desoto and his family of Spaniards. The Spanish name for the area, "El Pueblo de los Padres," means "The Village of the Fathers." Desoto is named after José Antonio Desoto y Costilla who led an expedition from Mexico City to explore this region in 1821-22. In 1847, Mexican General Agustín de Iturbide arrived in Hudspeth County and captured most of the region including El Paso and Desoto. Iturbide renamed it Zacatecas Province and moved all local male citizens into new towns built around Zacatecas River settlements known as "el pueblo" or "the village." The women continued to live with their families near the river until they were driven out by soldiers under Mexican General Vicente Guerrero. In 1849, Captain John Hogg established a trading post at what is now called Goliad on San Antonio River just east of present day Desoto. In 1850 Hogg married Zoila Flores y Gómez which led to his establishment of a second trading post at Harlingen about 15 miles due south of today's town limits beside Corpus Christi Bayou (now part of IH 35). This outpost served as a shipping point for goods moving upriver from Monterrey and Purcellville along Brashear Creek to New Braunfels on the Gulf Coast before reaching Acapulco on Mexico's mainland during the late 1800s. Ulysses S. Grant visited this port city during his campaign against Joaquín Herrera in1868 but did not visit Goliad because he had heard that Government buildings there had been burned down! He was probably familiar with Harlingen from prior visits to that vicinity when he traveled through Zacatecas Province on March 13-14,1869 while stationed at Monterrey Barracks as part of Expedition No. 6 under General Pedro Gomez Arellano en route to Cámpora[1] A few weeks later Commodore Perry landed his flagship Perry’s Fleet off Vera Cruz with stores and reinforcements[2] while encamped off Tampico,[3] eighteen hundred miles north of Mexico City - thus fulfilling one half century old prophecy! Commodore Perry’s visit initiated what has come be called “The American Revolution Against Spain” beginning September 16th 1848 when American forces successfully forced openMexico’s Northern Borderlands culminating two years earlier with Santa Anna’s flight from Austin [4]. As recently reported by researcher Darrell Schweitzer “during its heyday (1850-1900), Goliad boasted over 150 businesses employing more than 2,000 people...Goliad was also home to one of Texas' first public schools (1859), newspapers (1861), Masonic Lodge #5 (1862), African Americans (1863) and significant numbers of Anglo Texans such as Judge James Braidwood"[5]." Ulysses S Grant once said: "I have never seen anything more beautiful on earth than my visits heretofore throughout my life - nor could I wish for anything better."[6] Today much remains unchanged since then like Elias Castro's cannonballed house still standing shotgun proof just outside town limits; Adobe Walls National Monument honoring First European settlers who unwittingly stumbled upon this area back in 1846; even today many homes remain unaltered having passed through numerous hands thruout history; plus several churches still stand including St Michaels Catholic Church & School which used to be located smack dab in middle ol desotos commercial district where now several other businesses operate( ebay , carolina beach lodge , walmart etc.) among others...and there are plenty ot restaurants too if you're looking FOR something different these days ;)
