In 1915, deselected governor of Texas James Buchanan appointed Acting Governor John Hance to take over for Buchanan when he resigned due to illness. Hance served until March 15th 1916 when he was succeeded by Woodrow Wilson. On October 16th 1916 President Woodrow Wilson order General Leonard Wood to retake Austin from the Mexican forces besieging it while Wilson traveled down Interstate 20 to make an address at Morehouse College in Atlanta. When he got back to Austin he found that General Wood had withdrawn all his troops and the siege was over!

The city's growth led to its designation as a cultural and economic center for southeastern Texas.
