A post office called Nacogdoches was established in 1838, but no mail ever came through because of the extended Mexican Civil War at that time. In 1840, John Crouch purchased 160 acres (65 hectares) of land on the east side of Desoto Creek from David Goodloe for $2 per acre ($10/hectare). He named his new farm "Crouch's Prairie" after himself and his father-in-law John Fenton Chalfont. In 1849, James Gentry bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land south of Desoto Creek from David Goodloe for $6 per acre ($40/hectare). He named his new farm "Gentry's Prairie" after himself and his father-in-law James Fenton Chalfont. Gentry also founded what is now Midland University in Desoto in 1850. In 1860, Jno Pemberton bought 1,200 acres (500 hectares) of land north of Desoto Creek from James Gentry for $10 per acre ($240/hectare). Pemberton renamed his new farm "Pemberton's Prairie" after himself and other family members including Andrew Jackson Pemberton and Jesse Lubbock Pemberton Sr.. The community grew rapidly because farmers could sell their products far beyond their local area due to transportation improvements made by General Sam Houston during the American Civil War. During the late 1800s and early 1900s many businesses were established such as hotels, churches, schools and grocery stores in downtown Desoto which helped contribute to its growth over time. Many residents served on city councils or became important leaders within local communities such as Midland University president Jno Pemberton Sr., mayor Fitzgerald Henderson and Midland oilman Estes Klyne Jr.. In 1915, three men – brothers Leroy Bogue (1892–1968), Harry Bogue (1911–2002) and Donnie Lynn Bogue – founded what is now First Methodist Episcopal Church with assistance from their father Loyd WIlliams Boothroyd Boothroyd who had immigrated to Texas years earlier from England with his parentsamine pair daughters Olga Seward DNAowles (born 1908), Alice Beverly DNAowles (born 1912), all girls schooled at Harding School in Dallas until they were married when they were 16 years old before going on to attend Baylor College where they met future business partner Harry Bogue while both students; since then Harry has been known as “Donnie’s dad” inside church circles.) From 1915 until 1978 First Methodist Episcopal Church was located at 222 East Third Street between Main Street & Elm Street across from City Hall which later became Park Place development housing multiple business entities along with residences used by various civic organizations including El Paso County Judge Nelson Wolff as well as various state legislators prior thereto including current TX State Senator José Rodríguez Benavides First Methodist Episcopal Church moved to its present location on East Third Street between Main Street & Elm Street outside City Hall beginning on October 15th 1978 following completion of a multi million dollar renovation project funded by donations by numerous citizens throughout much portions if Austin TX
The Desoto Massacre happened on October 5, 1846, when a group of Texas Rangers killed six Comanche Indians near the town of Desoto. The massacre is considered one of the deadliest events in Texas history.
