In 1901, Anglo-American Oil Co., which later merged with Texaco Inc., drilled 2 wells at an estimated depth of . These wells were producers that helped begin to transform this area into one of center stage oil production in Texas during the early 1900s. In 1909 cattle ranchers gave up their ranching activities to focus exclusively on raising beef for local consumption rather than shipping it off to other parts of America; this change led to increased demand for water used by agriculturalists and led to new development around Springwood Lake east of town - today's Springwood neighbourhood - because infrastructure could be built only where there was need for it: irrigation canals brought water from nearby Hill Country reservoirs necessary for agriculture while also providing access roads needed for truckers transporting goods to marketplaces east and west of town
