By 1870, when Texas became an independent country, several thousand Texans had arrived here from all over Texas looking for new opportunities and adventure. Denton quickly emerged as one of America's leading cities – its downtown district being called "the financial center of Texas." Its economic success led to rapid growth throughout most of the 20th century and into the 21st century; today it continues to grow steadily with a population of nearly 350,000 residents and more than 100 businesses operating within its boundaries alone!
