Denton, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 139,859 as of the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Texas. Denton is located on the Texan Gulf Coast and is surrounded by Hillsborough County to the south and east; Parker County to the north and west; and Eagle Pass Micropolitan Statistical Area to the northwest. The area now comprising Denton was first settled by British colonists in 1795 and became part of East Texas during the Mexican–American War. After Mexico's defeat at Battle of Palo Alto on October 16, 1846, American settlers influxed into what would become Denton from all over Southwestern Texas. In 1881, when Dallas was founded as a city, much of what would become Denton were annexed by it. In 1916, when Arlington Heights was established as a suburb of Dallas, much of what would become Denton were annexed also. The original name for the current city was "New Austin". In 1927 voters passed an ordinance changing its name to "Denton" after Jock Mahoney Sr., who had opened a general store there in 1922 with his brother Jock Mahoney Jr.. The town site that includes present day downtown Denton had been surveyed in 1873 by George Wacoal under contract from Mesquite Rancho Santa Anna de la Garza y Costilla et al., grantee of Rancho San Antonio de Padre de Nuevo Laredo Seco (later Chihuahua). The first post office at this location (in what is now called First Ward) opened on November 1, 1874.
