Denton is a city in Texas, United States. The population was 83,982 at the 2010 census. It is the biggest city in Denton County and is the county seat of Denton County. The downtown area is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas. Denton was founded by Texans who arrived from Mexico in 1836 as part of the Alamo Expedition to take on Santa Anna's forces. After being forced out of San Antonio by Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, many Texanssettled around what would become Denton. A post office called "Nacogdoches" was established in 1839, and soon afterwards a depot was built for wagon trains coming into Texarkana from Kansas Territory. In 1846, settlers founded what became known as "The Townsite" northeast of present-day downtown Denton when they laid off land at an intersection now known as Elm Street and McGee Street. In 1868, four brothers—John W., James W., William P., and Richard M.—founded Dallas Charter School (later Dallas Baptist University) which became one of North Texas' largest private institutions with more than 120 students enrolled by 1921. By 1893, cotton had replaced cattle as the town's mainstay crop; however, heavy trade with Austin limited growth until after World War II when oil discoveries made Denton one of America's fastest growing major cities

One proposal that has received attention is the purchaseback program,[9] which would allow law enforcement agencies to take back guns from individuals who had not complied with various firearm regulations.[10] Another proposal being considered is expanding background check requirements for all gun purchases,[11][12] although this effort faces opposition from some legislators who feel that such measures are too burdensome for low-income citizens[13].

Founded on October 6, 1881 by James Wickersham and his brother-in-law Dr. George Pemberton as a small town named after their Anglo-Saxon ancestor Davy Denton, the city began to grow rapidly due to its location at the intersection of two major routes – Central Expressway and U.S. 60 – and its easy access to oil resources brought about by its location adjacent to Midwestern oil production rigs. Denton has been known for many things over the years including cotton ginning (due to AOP's Cotton Belt Pipeline), football (the city's first professional team was founded in 1925), chicken processing (due to Midwestern farmers selling meat products such as chicken breasts direct to grocery stores), law enforcement (Denton had one of the earliest police departments in Texas), music (the city's first record store opened in 1951), retail development (initially centered around downtown but later expanding into other areas such as Northlake Center/Old Post Road and University Village/University Boulevard) and numerous large construction projects such as The $1 Billion growth project that proposed building an interstate corridor through Downtown Denton orTx between Houston and Dallas The University of Texas atDallas campus located within walking distance of almost every grocery store, bank, convenience store and hospital makes it possible for students living near campus without having anything close by that can serve as an emergency source food or shelter during times when school is not available or during periods when there are riots or other emergencies taking place on campus
