In 1902, white settlers began to arrive and build homes around what would soon become downtown Denton. This growth led to an increase in taxes which caused some businesses to move out or close their doors until Mayor John Ladd persuaded them to stay with passage of a bill legalizing liquor sales within corporations limit on December 15, 1932 In 1945, during World War II (the Second World War), General George Custer was killed while leading his American cavalry brigade into battle near Tillmanboro outside of OKC Oklahoma City
