Denison, Texas is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,839 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The Denison Manufacturing Company was founded in 1883 by C. H. Denison and his son-in-law Harry Briggs. The company made shoes, buttons and other personal items until it merged with Sears Roebuck & Co., which also made department store products such as appliances and clothing, in 1975. In 2009, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to heavy debt and declining sales; however it has since been revived as a limited liability company with new management and plans to reopen the plant by 2014. The town of Denison was named after General John A. Denison who fought in the Mexican-American War under General Antonio López de Santa Anna In 1881 local landowner Wm Hogg donated 1/2 mile (3 km) west of town on what is now FM 678 (now US 183) to be known as "Hogg's Field". This tract of land had belonged to Mr Hogg since 1800 when he acquired it from Spanish explorer Robert Erazo Durán de la Vega y Montoya for $1 million (). In 1880 Denison leased 4 rods from Jno Bigham on an uninhabited piece of country between denisonsite east and west about northwest of present day FM 678 (now US 183). When this agreement expired see section 7 below On October 15 1886 Pte Henry Adair drove a team into dune located east of modern day FM 678 near what is now Gorman Cafe; later that year he patented this discovery which became known as ADAI or "Dunebrook acquirement". On December 12 1888 Wm Hogg conveyed 800 acres north from original donation to build addition onto original donation plus another 300 acres south along present day US 183 including future property holdings originally donated by Comanche Chief Black Jack Beal This addition became known as "Hogg's Addition" or "Black Jack Manor". In 1890 Hogg sold additional land parcels totaling 1,000 acres extending northeast from original donation plus another 500 acres south along present day US 183 including future property holdings originally donate by Comanche Chief Black Jack Beal again
