In 1907, Denison residents voted to incorporate as a city. A year later, the city purchased 12 shotguns from the Maynard Rifle Company and began using them for target practice. The shotguns became known as "The Denison Shotguns". By 1912, the city had outgrown its shotgun range and decided to build its own. The first shotgun factory was built on Central Avenue in 1913. This factory produced over 100 shotguns per year until World War II when it was destroyed by fire. In 1946, the Denison Pistol Club was founded and soon after they purchased a pistol production line from Colt handguns. The pistols were used for target practice until 1957 when they were replaced by rifles. Today, theDenison Rifle Society operates two rifle ranges: one on West Second Street and one on North Third Street. They also operate a museum which displays firearms dating back to 1892.
