In 1907, the city of Denison annexed the towns of Fayetteville and Waco to form a new city. In 1916, Denison absorbed the villages of Asbury and Winkler into its community. In 1940, all of McLennan County became an independent state and Denison remains its only incorporated municipality today. TheDenison Independent School District covers all of McLennan County within its borders with over 60 schools including high schools, middle schools, pre-kindergarten through grade 12th grades as well as one private school (Stratford Academy). All public elementary and secondary students attend these districts while several private religious academies also operate in the area outside the school district boundaries
The Denison, Texas community began as a small farming town in Haskell County, Texas. The first residents of the town were pioneers who arrived in the area in 1851. By 1862, the population of Denison had increased to 350 people and it was renamed from Haskell to Denison in honor of its new residents. In 1865, the first post office was opened in Denison and by 1886, the community had a population of 1,000 people. The growth of Denison led to an increase in businesses and by 1907, there were 25 businesses operating in the town. In 1916, Denion became an incorporated municipality and by 1925, it had a population of 2,500 people. The growth of denison led to an increase in housing opportunities and by 1930, there were 10 homes available for sale in the town. In 1942, denison was hit with a devastating tornado that destroyed many homes and businesses within the community. Despite this setback, denion continued to grow and by 1946 it had reached 4,000 residents. By 1955, denion had reached 7500 residents and by 1960 it had surpassed 10 thousand residents. During its time as a small farming town located east of Dallas near Fort Worth;Denison experienced significant economic development due to its proximity to major metropolitan areas such as Dallas-Fort Worth Airport (DAL)and Dallas-Ft Worth International Airport (DFW).
