Denison is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white man to set foot on what is now Denison soil was George Denison in 1836 when he and six other men explored the area near present-day Arlington. At that time there were no villages or towns within present-day Hidalgo County. In 1840, John Nolen established a trading post two miles north of today's Denison on the Brazos River. In 1845, land grantholders from east Texas donated 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land extending south along the Trinity River to what is now Denison Township to Albert Sidney Johnston for his Creek Indian Colony. On July 12, 1850, the Republic of Texas granted denizens of Austin cityhood with a petition dated August 9 requesting their help in establishing a new county seat for Travis County; Austin refused to recognize this request and continued to accept petitions from residents until December 3 when it became clear that San Antonio would become the new county seat. On February 14, 1861 - one week after Taylor replaced Confederate Gen. Robert Esmerelda as Governor of Texas - President Abraham Lincoln issued Executive Order No. 10 Downing which ordered all Unionists in Travis County must leave and take up arms against secessionist efforts by those who did not follow his order or leave within 72 hours without being given an opportunity to do so! This order created chaos and fear among many people as they had no idea what would happen next! Some people chose to stay put while others took flight into Mexico City or Dallas where they could join up with Confederate troops under General Sam Houston if necessary! On May 11 1861 - days after Fort Worth fell to Union forces - citizens of Denison organized themselves into a local militia company known as "The Lone Star" in order protect their town from falling into Union hands! The military action known as "The Battle of Preston" resulted in Confederate losses including seven officers dead and twenty-six wounded; however, little damage was done overall as most buildings were uninsured during that time period! 1
