Denison, Texas is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and the county seat of Denison County. It was founded in 1845 as a town on the Brazos River by landowner John Denison. The first post office was established in 1846, and the town charter was granted in 1850. In 1860, it became an independent republic under President Abraham Lincoln with its own government and currency system called "The Confederate States dollar". After secession from the United States and split off from Texas in 1861, Denison continued to be part of Confederate Arkansas until 1865 when it joined Union Kansas following that state's admission into the Union as part of the new American Civil War. After Texas seceded from the United States in 1865, Dallas became its new capital and DenISON fell within Dallas limits; however, it continued to have its own government until 1870 when it merged with Fort Worth to form what is now known as Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. In 1930, Denison consolidated with other nearby towns (including Arlington Heights) to form Archer City which still exists today as a separate municipality within Archer City County listed on the National Register of Historic Places
Denison, Texas is the most recent town to be founded in Denison County. The first post office was established at Denison on October 1, 1879. It was moved to its present location on May 25, 1890.
