Denison, Texas is a city located in Denison County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,509 at the 2010 census and 5,898 at the 2015 census. The Denison community was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named it after their homeland of Dunkeld in Scotland. In 1907 the town became an independent municipality. On November 16, 2017 Denison voters passed a resolution to become an official city within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Denison Manufacturing Company was founded by John A. Denison in 1881 as part of what would be eventually becoming one of America's largest and most successful cotton textile companies. With its original facilities on Buffalo Road (now Tomlinson Avenue), the company manufactured uniforms for military and civil agencies across much of southern America before moving its operations to newly built facilities north of downtown in 1911. During World War II, the company produced tanks and artillery products for both American and Japanese forces under license from British manufacturers including Salford Motors Limited. The plant closed following the war but resumed production in 1949 as part of a larger reorganization that saw many smaller businesses merged into one giant conglomerate known as Texaco Corporation until its acquisition by ExxonMobil in 1984. In recent years, Denison has seen significant redevelopment with new housing developments being constructed along Tomlinson Avenue as well as corporate headquarters for various local businesses such as Shell Oil Company and Centennial College (formerly Southwest Christian University). John A. Denison is credited with bringing retail shopping to downtown Dallas during his time at Texaco Corporation; however, he left DENISON BUSINESSES AFTER THE EARLY 1970s TO WORK FOR WILBUR SMITH COMPANY INC., AMERICA'S LARGEST BANKING COMPANY WITH ITS OWN STORES IN ALL OF DALLAS COUNTY BEFORE HIS RETIREMENT IN 1992 ADJUTANT GENERAL OF TEXAS FROM THAT POSITION IN 1996 GOVERNOR OF TEXAS BEFORE BEING ELECTED TO THE UNITED STATES SENATE FROM LUBBOCK WHERE HE SERVED FROM 2003 TO 2009 UPI reports that he died on October 21st 2018 aged 100 years old

The Denison familyowned and operated a general store until their death in 1938. In 1950, the Denisons were posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Harry S Truman. From 1951 to 1957, Denison was home to the CIA's Dallas Station (later known as headquarters for Central Intelligence Agency) which occupied an entire block of North Main Street between Elm and Commerce Streets. In 1961, the station was relocated to Arlington Cemetery due to concerns over radioactivity from nuclear weapons testing conducted nearby at Trinity Site No. 4. Today, DenISON is a cultural and commercial center located near downtown Dallas with over 120 businesses operating within its borders.
On March 6, 1836, Denison was founded as a town in Gregg County by Nicholas Denison. The first post office was established in Denison on July 1, 1837. On January 16, 1840, the Texas Legislature designated Denison the county seat of Gregg County.
