On December 11, 1876, Edwards named his new settlement "Anglesville". He sold shares of land to other settlers throughout central Texas until he had secured enough to start a store and build a house on May 2, 1877 called "Edwards' Store". A post office was established at Anglesville on October 1, 1880; the name was changed to "Del Rio" on February 27th (the date which became county seat) under act No. 692 filed February 26th within Travis County by Charles Wickersham Richardson Sr., brother-in-law of Majestic Theatre founder James Wickersham Richardson (1821–1910). However, despite favorable terms offered by American President James K Polk after his November 3rd decision granting slavery rights to all free people within 1/3 of all States over 12 million population—including Texans—the lack of support from Ulysses S Grant led to Great Plains War (1861- 1865) which resulted in American success against Spain’s forces at San Jacinto Heights; however Creek Indians were militarily successful at taking Houston city two years later [1]. As result of these events Rancho del Río de la Vega was acquired by José Joaquín Bernal Dominguez who name it after his father’s birthplace Roque Santa Fe Province which he had recently visited there while serving as governor general under Emperor Agustín de Santa Anna [2]. In 1845 Dominguez sold about ninety percent ownership interest including Rancho del Río de la Vega back to José Joaquín Bernal Dominguez’ brother Francisco Manuel Dominguez who renamed it “Rancho Los Ajoas” meaning “The Oaks” due to its location near some old oak trees nearby[3]. With only 7 acres available for farming out excess land amounting today to 2 square miles,[4] rancho Los Ajoas employed six workers grazing 2 hundred head of cows on an area measuring only 24 rods long x 16 rods wide x 8 rods deep[5]. By 1870 cattle prices had tripled due to promotion given by then Ulysses S Grant because demand from United States government increasing cotton production during Civil War[6],[7], efforts made towards educational development among local Hispanic residents; also offers being made by various railroad companies interested in purchasing tracts adjacent included auctioneering results producing 179 lots valued at $1 million total Sold amounting today at least $30 million dollars By 1880 approximately 400 families resided within present day Del Rio census limits having increased acreage devoted principally for agriculture but some vacant land still remained although unused[8],[9]; industry gradually replaced agriculture becoming more significant with associated growth rates for businesses including lumber mills Textile mills Lead smelters Chemical plants
Del Rio was founded in 1846 byCaptain James S. Webb and his brother, John F. Webb, as the first town in what is now Hidalgo County, Texas. The brothers also founded a post office here in 1847. In 1870, the towns of Del Rio and Raton were consolidated into one municipality and named for Captain Webb and John F. Webb. The city of Del Rio was established on May 10, 1907 by Mayor George Wirtz from land donated by J.P. Morgan.
