The first gunsights were designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. Del Rio was established in 1848 as a post office and trading center on the south bank of the Colorado River. When Fremont arrived in 1846, he found an unbroken range of rolling hills extending from what is now west El Paso County to east San Antonio County. He named his new land "Fremont County," after himself and developed it into a thriving town with multiple businesses and homes. In 1860, when Mexico became embroiled in a bloody civil war against American settlers, Del Rio sided with Mexico and seceded from Texas; this event is generally considered to have begun the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). The city continued to grow during the war years due to military recruits coming through its ports along the north side of the river. In addition, cotton was becoming an important crop in southern Texas during this time and local entrepreneurs engaged in cotton plantations near present day Corpus Christi. A railroad was constructed through central Del Rio in 1869, making it easier for goods to be transported across country; this boom period also helped bring about social change in downtown Del Rio. From 1870 until 1924, Del Rio enjoyed one of the highest rates of population growth in Texas; by 1910 it had more residents than Dallas or Houston combined. By 1940 only 8%of Del Rio's residents were white compared to 100% among Texans statewide! A major inflow of Italian refugees following World War II led to increased commercial activity around Central Avenue/Downtown Plaza and ensuing gentrification which has preserved much original architecture dating back to early 20th century while accommodating growing Latino populations since then In recent years there has been significant discussion about revitalizing downtownDelRio along lines such as pedestrian footbridges connecting different districts giving people more individualized experiences instead Of bundled scenes within blocks where commerce predominates
