Del Rio, Texas is a city located in San Antonio County, Texas, on the south bank of the Concho River. The population was 177,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio-Arlington-New Braunfels, TX metropolitan statistical area. The city was named for Commodore John C. Del Rio who fought in the Mexican–American War and later served as an United States Senator from New Mexico. The first people to live in what is now Del Rio were Creek Indians who hunted game and collected plants and fruits near present day downtown. They were followed by Mexicans who founded La Hacienda de Arana (now Araneta Park) on a site where today's Del Rio Bridge stands. Spanish traders arrived in 1836 and traded goods with Native Americans including items such as beads, feathers, cornmeal, beans, horses and mules before finally settling down in what is now Del Rio after being expelled by the Nacogdoches Indians near Fort Randall during the Texas Revolution. In 1839 General Sam Houston divided San Antonio County into two parts which became known as Austin and Brownsville while Houston still controlled Harrisburg which included much of what is now Del Rio County. A year later General Houston sold all but 4 square miles of Harrisburg to James Bowie for $2 million making it land central toHouston's expanding empire becoming one of America's most important Borderlands regions In 1847 Anglo American settlers arrived via paddle steamer "SS Alabama" from Galveston landing at what are now Clearwater Beach & Manzanillo Beach on Stono Bayou just across from Corpus Christi Island following a decades long effort led by Captains John Denny and Charles Posey It was not until 1872 when a group of men under Colonel Waddell established mining camps at Crystal City & Eagle Ford while construction continued on Trinity Dam providing irrigation water for nearby ranching operations Del Rio began its Chihuahuan Border Expansion Era when railroad entrepreneurs bought land east of IH 35 along Buffalo Bayou starting investigations into building a railroad through that region linking El Paso with Ciudad Juárez Mexico City Railroad promoters built new stations at Alice Springs & Ector where they discovered coal seams then shipped it back overland through country side burro trails to refinery complexes in MidlandCoalition towns such as Odessa & Monterrey before finally reaching Dallas/Fort Worth via Union Pacific Railroad mainline

The history of Del Rio began with the arrival of Spanish colonists in 1736. The first permanent Anglo American settlement in Texas was established by Capt. John Crouch and his group of Englishmen in 1768 near what is now Kingwood City. In 1846, four years after Mexico's independence from Spain, Mexican forces burned down the city to prevent its incorporation into Texan Mexico as ordered by Santa Anna. American settlers quickly founded businesses and homes in Del Rio, contributing to its rapidly developing economic base and becoming an important cultural center within Anglo America during the late 19th century." In 1924, Del Rio became one of fifteen cities in Texas to become a part of the United States following passage of Senate Bill 579 which opened up Texans' state borders to other citizens for voting purposes. The city continued rapid growth throughout the 20th century due to its importance as an agricultural center and industrial town; today it has over 100 businesses employing over 200 workers and boasts a high quality of life including public transportation options and several nightlife venues
The Rio Grande Valley was a region in the southwestern United States that was historically inhabited by the Apache, Chiricahua Apache, and Cochise Apaches. The area now known as Del Rio was first populated by Native Americans. The area became part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War, and then the United States after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area became a cattle country, and many people worked on ranches. In 1846, John C. Frémont explored what is now Del Rio and named it for General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who had led Mexico's successful war against Ulysses S. Grant's forces in 1845.
