During its early years, Del Rio served as both the capital and the seat of government for Hudspeth County. In 1907, the county seat moved to Brownsville and Del Rio became an unincorporated community. As part of the 2010 Census, Del Rio had a population of 361 residents. The history of Del Rio dates back to when Irish immigrants arrived in what is now Hudspeth County during the late 1800s to start anew after an unsuccessful attempt to settle in America permanently. A group led by Patrick Creagh set out from Dublin on July 12th, 1853 with fifteen men and two wagons carrying goods and seeds for what would be known as present-day El Paso County (now 8 Dallas counties). The journey took six days and they arrived at San Antonio on July 26th; however their supplies ran out before they could establish themselves permanently. Creagh’s group built a cabin near present day downtown El Paso and began trading with Native Americans along the riverbank until September 5th when they were attacked by local Indians resulting in one man dead and five men wounded including Creagh himself who received severe injuries which ended his life four days later at age 37 years old while hunting buffalo on IH 10 between Pecos Mesa & Coahuila City east of modern day El Paso city limits). In November 1858 three hundred people from Dublin traveled downriver past Deming Junction where they stored goods brought overland via wagon trains bound for New Mexico Territory towards Santa Fe but bad weather prevented them from reaching their destination despite best efforts by French American trader Antoine de Saint-Pierrenet who offered help transport goods across open water but this offer was declined because de Saint-Pierrenet did not want any trouble with Ute nomads living near his mission station at Presidio Rancho del Norte (present day Alamosa) which he called “The Prairie” due to its long prairies leading inland unto Apache Pass). On July 29th 1850 another small group consisting mainly Englishmen under Captains J B Hogg (father-in-law of William Prescott), James Fenton (brother-in-law of Major General Earl Johnston) John Colquitt(husbandman/farmer), George Cooke(coal mine owner) landowner Thomas Fitzpatrick joined forces with Indian guides Pierre Dorion(a white Frenchman)and Jean Baptiste Chouteau to travel upriver approximately 800 miles through rugged country finally reaching Red River Gorge where they camped for two nights under cover of darkness before continuing upstream until reaching Fort Bridger west Carson National Forest outsidepresent day Colorado Springs where they abandoned their horses due to intense blistering heat then continued southwesterly following Bridger Creek all the way down into Mexican territory before finally arriving at Ft Stockton January 6th 1861.) From there they proceeded northeastward following Stockton Road until reached Tucson Marana Desert where night forced them onto trail northwesterly through Padres Land into California then ultimately arriving safely at Sacramento May 25th 1861.) It wasn’t until 1862 that Captain Hogg's party discovered oil discovery off shore near Point Concho just above modern day Lubbock Texas when some high school students found shale dust scattered among driftwood inside Anadarko Bayou area now occupied by White Sands Missile Range - an event which forever changed region around point Concho.. A second Anglo American exploration expedition led by Captain John Ransom Jr., sonof explorer John Ransom Sr.(1771 – 1865), visited Anadarko Bayou site again on August 16th 1863 but within hours encountered hostile Indians who looted & burned equipment leaving behind large quantities OF SHALE DUST ON THE WATER FOREST! This event became known as Battle Of Anadarko Bayou or Houston Explosion after Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter USN Commanding USS Astoria caused initial damage aboard USS Perry during battle .. subsequent investigations revealed that although Shale Dust was certainly responsible FOR THIS INCIDENT SOME OTHER CAUSE WAS ALSO RESPONSIBLE INCLUDING A FIRE THAT BURNT DOWN AN EMBARRASSING 9 STORY TOWERS IN THE BUSINESS DISTRICT OF ANADARKO BAYOU .. AFTER HOURS OF OPERATIONS INVESTIGATORS DISCOVERED THAT SOURCE CODE WAS BLISTERING ROCKS NO LONGER ACCEPTING NEW FIELD ORGANS BUT MIGHT BE SUPPORTING ORIGINAL GAS STREAM BACK IN ADAMS DAY CATTLE FARMER / NOTIONALLY PRODUCER OF SHALE GAS!) In 1865 Captain Dixon Porter led another Anglo American exploration party consisting almost exclusively German American mercenaries ashore without proper Coast Guard escort resulting in serious injury to many sailors including Commodore Jesse Rees USN commanding USS Constitution whose flagship HMS Guerriere collided with vessel while lying anchored offshore offshore causing massive loss Of Life & Damage! Commodore Porter lost his right armseverely] After being captured at sea he spent nine monthsprisonerofwar onboard HMS Guerriere priorto his release accompaniedby LtCdr Augustus Elliott RNVR] return ing USNS Constitution sailed from Havana Cuba headedfor Philadelphia April 11 1865 onlyto find herself blocksaded en route!! Commodore Porter made heroic escape AttemptingToCrossBayousUnderWetCoats &SnowShoesCountless Times riskingHisLife!)
