Del Rio is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas, on the Del Rio Peninsula. The population was 22,045 at the 2010 census. In 1872, a group of businessmen purchased 7,243 acres (269 hectares) north of town from José Valdez for $10 per acre ($2 million today). They named their new land Rancho Del Rio after their purchase date – July 19th 1870 acked up against a mountain nearby where a rancher had found saltpeter deposits that could be mined commercially. The men who developed this land were mainly cattle ranchers who used it for pasture and range extension purposes until well into the 21st century. Today some 3 million people live within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Del Rio including about 2 million workers at various businesses that are supported by its retail sector alone. Del Rio is a small town in Texas, located about 25 miles east of Austin. The community was founded in 1836 by General John C. Frémont and his companions as a stop on their journey from California to the Texas Revolution. In 1838, Frémont's group became the first American army to cross the Mexico-US border, and arrived in Del Rio after days of hiking and travel. After Mexican President Porfirio Díaz defeated Mexico at the Battle of Buena Vista on November 8, 1846, Ulysses S. Grant ordered U.S.Army troops to march into Texcoco (now El Paso) to clear out Mexican forces before they could pose a threat to United States interests in Central America. On December 6, 1846, General Josiah Boggs reported that he had killed "a very large number" of Mexican soldiers at Buena Vista; this effectively ended the Mexican-American War and brought peace to what was then known as Lower Texas. In 1865, Del Rio joined Union County and became part of the newly created state of Texasurchinhood on February 14th; it officially formed when all but Dallas County were organized into districts on March 3rdsbesides which it still functioned as an unincorporated community with its own board of directors until 1909 when it became a part of the larger town of Del Rio; following annexation by Austin in 1912 it also lost its independent status).
